Navigating ZTL and Parking in Lucca: What You Need to Know

One of the reasons we chose Lucca is its pedestrian-friendly streets and limited car traffic within the walls, making it easy to explore the city on foot. However, having a car in Lucca can be more of a burden, presenting confusion and challenges for visitors who arrive by car. Fortunately, with plenty of walking and biking options, as well as convenient access to buses and the train station, you can park your car upon arrival and likely won't need it much during your stay.

If you do plan to drive into Lucca, you can enter through designated access points in the historic walls to drop off luggage or passengers. However, it’s essential to avoid the Zona a Traffico Limitato (ZTL) once you're inside, as this restricted area is monitored by cameras that capture license plates and can lead to fines for unauthorized vehicles. Understanding local parking regulations and zones is crucial for a smooth experience. Lucca's ZTL helps preserve its historical charm and manage traffic, but for first-time visitors, navigating these restrictions can feel overwhelming, especially if you're unfamiliar with the signs and rules. With a little preparation, you can avoid fines and enjoy your trip without the worry of parking confusion. Here’s what you need to know...

Understanding the ZTL

The ZTL is a restricted area where vehicle access is limited to residents, permit holders, and authorized vehicles. Signs will indicate the entrance to the ZTL, and it is enforced with cameras that capture the license plates of unauthorized vehicles.

The bottom line for visitors? If you’re not staying in the city center or don’t have special permission, DO NOT drive into the ZTL! To avoid the hassle and expense, it’s best to stay aware of parking regulations and enjoy Lucca’s charm on foot, bike, or public transport—without the worry of fines following you long after your visit.

Accidents Happen

If you accidentally drive into a Zona a Traffico Limitato (ZTL), don't be surprised if months after your trip, you receive an unwelcome email. The city has a highly efficient system of cameras that track vehicles entering restricted areas, and they’ll track you down too, even if you're long back home. They’ll work through your rental car company, using your contract details to send the violation right to your inbox—along with a hefty fine. So, while you might have left your heart in Lucca, ...you may find a ZTL violation waiting for you back home. Or, a ticket souvenir could still arrive several months later!

One of the reasons we chose Casa Campolattaro is its ideal location within the city walls, just outside the ZTL. This makes it convenient for deliveries and guest drop-offs. For added ease, there’s a parking lot just a block away and a parking garage directly across the street. We typically recommend that guests drive to the house to unload their luggage, then park in the nearby lot or outside the walls for the remainder of their stay.

Parking Line Colors and Their Meanings

Understanding the parking lots is also critical. Lucca’s parking spots are marked with different colored lines, each indicating specific regulations:

Blue Lines: These spots are for paid parking. Pay attention to the parking meters or pay-and-display machines to purchase a ticket, and make sure to display it prominently on your dashboard. Rates and hours of operation can vary, so check the signage for details. After paying for parking at the kiosk, a slip will be printed, which you must place visibly on your dashboard. Parking is typically charged by the hour, usually around 1.5 Euros per hour. Signs will indicate the hours during which payment is required, often from 8 AM to 8 PM. This means you won't need to pay for overnight parking after 8 PM. But, make sure you get back before 8AM or a ticket will await you!

White Lines: White-lined spaces are free parking spots. These are harder to come by and typically located further from the city center but are a great option if you’re willing to walk a bit to get to the heart of Lucca.

Yellow Lines: In Lucca Centro, yellow lines designate parking reserved for residents with permits. DO NOT park here. These spaces are off-limits to visitors without the proper authorization, and parking here can result in fines or towing.

FREE Parking Options

While parking in Lucca’s city center can be costly, several free parking options are available:

Outside the City Walls: Free parking is available in areas outside the historic city walls. Parking lots and street parking in these areas might require a bit of a walk into the center but are cost-effective. Popular locations include near the train station and around the city’s outskirts.

Public Parking Areas: Some public parking lots might offer free or lower-cost parking. Look for lots situated a bit further from the ZTL, which may also provide access to public transportation or bike rentals.

Residential Streets: In some residential areas outside the ZTL, free parking might be available. Be sure to check local signage to avoid any parking violations.

Garages: For convenient parking in the western end of Lucca's Centro Storico, near Casa Campolattaro, the Pasquinelli garage on Via Vittorio Emanuele II is a great option. Located just across from our building, it provides easy access to the city center. However, be aware of the ZTL camera further up Via Vittorio Emanuele II, near the junction with Piazza della Magione. Make sure to avoid driving beyond this point unless you have proper authorization to enter the ZTL.

Long-Term Parking Passes

For longer stays in Lucca, you might want to consider obtaining a long-term parking pass. Visit this site to review the requirements for obtaining this pass.

  • While it’s not necessary to fill out the forms before arriving, doing so can save you time. After arriving in Lucca, head to the Carducci Parking Lot, where you’ll find a building/kiosk that issues permits. They are open Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 13:30 and Saturday from 08:30 to 12:30.

  • On the form, select your chosen parking lot closest to your accommodations.

  • Planning ahead is key, since you'll need to bring photocopies of your car’s registration and your driver’s license/IDP, as they will not copy these items at the office. The cost for a one-month pass is reasonable at 50 euros, which can be paid by credit card. You can renew this pass at automated machines for an extended period, provided it does not expire.

By understanding Lucca’s parking system, including ZTL regulations, line colors, and long-term parking options, you can avoid fines and fully enjoy your visit to our enchanting city. And, with a bit of planning, you’ll navigate parking with ease and immerse yourself in the beauty and history of Lucca without the headaches of tickets!
